The pīwakawaka (fantail) holds deep significance in Māori culture and mythology. It is often seen as a messenger and is associated with both life and death. In many traditions, the pīwakawaka is believed to be a bearer of news, sometimes bringing messages from the spirit world (wairua). Because of its bold and inquisitive nature, it is sometimes seen as a guardian or guide, leading people through the forest or warning them of nearby danger.
This linocut print captures the delicate beauty of the pīwakawaka (fantail), a beloved native bird of Aotearoa New Zealand, nestled among lush native ferns. The intricate carving highlights the bird’s distinctive fan-like tail, splayed open in a moment of movement, while its small, inquisitive form is framed by the graceful, curling fronds of the forest.
